At Gillibrand, science is at the heart of our creative curriculum. Through the teaching of the National Curriculum we aim to give our pupils a greater understanding of themselves, the world around them and the scientific processes that surround them. We use pre- and post- learning to ensure our curriculum is bespoke to the individual needs of each child, encouraging well-planned, engaging and practical lessons that promote and challenge children’s scientific enquiry skills alongside the teaching of scientific knowledge and understanding. Where possible, we use our local area and the extensive school ground as a vehicle to put science into real-life contexts and make the National Curriculum content meaningful. Through our carefully mapped out ‘working scientifically’ objective, we ensure children are given first-hand experiences of scientific processes. Children are taught how to question, observe, record and evaluate the effectiveness of their investigations and, in turn, show the key aspects of the school’s values: working hard and persevering when they find things difficult and learning from the mistakes that they might make. Through the teaching of Science, our pupils become competent and confident in using scientific and other vocabulary. They develop year group overviews that ensure all vocabulary is built upon and retained over time.
We also aim to take inspiration from scientific ‘greats’, giving our pupils the opportunity to learn about scientific discoveries of the past and how they have shaped modern day life. By engaging in learning about real-life scientists, pupils become inspired and learn to believe they can achieve anything they want to. To support our science curriculum further, we have developed links with our local high schools. These links allow us to extend children’s knowledge as they experience science in a different environment with more sophisticated equipment, that primary schools are unable to provide. We also utilise external providers, who provide exciting and interactive experiences for the children, including through working with such agencies in an extra-curricular setting.
